Vendemmia

An eye-opening look at the true costs of tourism
This documentary is beautifully shot and edited, and reveals what is facing the Cinque Terre region of Italy as economic, social, and political mores shift. From staggering views of cliffside vineyards to personal interviews with stakeholders in Vernazza, this film explores what most tourists never even consider--that the more they visit, bringing in much-needed revenue to municipalities, the more they inadvertently remove the authenticity of what they are visiting. "Vendemmia" features a family that has made wine by hand as their relatives had for centuries before them, and explores what happens when the present collides with the past. How can you run a sustainable business without sacrificing what makes it unique, and how can traditions merge with a global economy?

This film forced me to think about my role as a tourist, and how "leave no trace" extends far beyond camping. Watching "Vendemmia" will make you reconsider your own tourism goals--I think it's laudable to...

A beautifully executed film! A worthy and relevant tribute to the beauty and struggles of the Cinque Terre.
There are people across the world that have never heard of the Cinque Terre. There are actually people in Italy that are not familiar with this area and have never visited there. There are some of us that know and love this beautiful place, but never knew of their day to day struggles. If this is your first introduction, it will certainly pique your interest in this area. If you already have a long time love affair with the Cinque Terre, you will go away with a new respect for her people and a desire to preserve the very life of one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Thanks to the passionate message in this film, hopefully we will have a better understanding of the delicate balance needed to sustain, and perpetuate the Cinque Terre with responsible tourism. Linda T.

A fascinating world.
A fascinating, in-depth look at how life used to be and how it is today in the Cinque Terre, and how tourism and the economy is impacting this stunningly beautiful part of the Italian coastline. How can the locals keep their traditional way of life yet survive in the modern world? This film explores that very question as it talks to the artisans and small business owners, some of whom embrace tourism while others fight against catering to the hoards that arrive, every season, in their sleepy villages from all over the planet. The Cinque Terre is captured in all its beauty with some wonderful vistas and moments as this film takes you into a world you might never see again.

The Graduation

Still loving it.
it is hard to keep a comedy fresh; but the writers and directors of The Middle are succeeding. This is an everyone in the family watches it series.

Intelligent w/o trying to be
The Middle is a series that takes 'mediocre' family life as its muse and turns out a hilarious and lovable show every time. It nimbly avoids the negativity and stereotypes that dominate a lot of other "family" shows. The humor is intelligent, perceptive and detailed (i.e., certain items in the background, Axel's reasoning process,e tc.). Highly recommend. REALLY hope this season (and Season 3) will be released on DVD in a timely manner.

Family life as it is in the middle.
The Middle has laughs and honesty while raising children in a middle income family. Great cast! The writing is excellent.

Good new show
Quite Entertaining. Good character development for a television show. Plots are well thought out. A mixture of serious and lighter themes.

Chicago Fire
I love this show, I work on the night it is on so I make sure the dvr is on to record it.

Great show!
Loving this show and looking forward to another season. I didn't start watching it on TV until the 5th or 6th episode, but once I did, I immediately went to Amazon and bought the earlier episodes. I hope this one sticks around for a while.

Criminal Minds is the best, especially instantly from Amazon!
This was a great episode, I almost didn't recognize Kim Wayans or McKenzie Phillips, they were great. However I miss Emily, The new girl is good, but she's not Emily Prentiss, I love the show because they have strong women that don't have to show skin to get notice or play super cop women, they seem real. I was happy that they brought JJ back. I like agent Hotchter.

Great series!
Love this show! Been watching it since its inception! :) Would recommend to anyone to watch it! They won't be sorry

3 Stars
I have been watching Criminal Minds since its first episode and have always loved it. The quality of the show has had its ups and down- the season in which Prentiss and JJ were dismissed was one of the worst. Many fans (including myself) didn't like the new agent, Seaver, who replaced the two veteran stars. But I think this season is truly worse even than Seaver's season (season 6, I think). Why? Because of the newest team member, Agent Blake. Her character is cold, dull, and has almost no sense of humor. I can't see her really bonding with the rest of the team, and in fact, she expressed a dislike for "sensitive" people. Does that mean she doesn't like Garcia or Morgan? They both get a bit sensitive and the cases sometimes get to them emotionally. Is she saying she'd rather work with robots?

I truly hope that the show either makes some changes to Blake's character or kindly asks her leave.

And what's with the endings? Why are they always the same? What's going...

Polka Face

This needs to be cancelled.
The sooner the better! If you like listening to people sing horribly off-key, you will love this show. No Simon-Cowell-ish clone to add in some humor- no these people take themselves too seriously and are 100% dedicated to butchering both music and my ears.

It's laughable at best
I thought the show was awful. The show focuses on the backstage drama and cattiness of the group rather than the actual performances. This may have been entertaining if the group were actually talented. This however, is not the case. They are a bunch of bitchy annoying divas, and they give other song groups of the same genre a bad name. The show is entertaining if you're looking for someone to make fun of. The management as well as the cast are an immature bunch of idiots and that's put nicely. Not worth your time or money.

Very Funny
OK... first off, I love how the people say they are not talented. What do you want? Sparklers out their ass? The show is a light hearted look at a community...NOT PROFESSIONAL group who loves what they do and loves each other... The management? Who is the management? You mean the directors? I thought that Rob guy was about as Simon as you could get! I watched the 5th episode and was tearing up. I beg to say that people who gave this one star think they are better and jealous that they didn't get this chance. While not perfect, this is way better that most the crap out there and it is nice to people have a passion for what they do other than fame and glory. You just need to relax and enjoy this for what it is. If you don't like it fine but to say they are not talented...watch the last show at the Mall Of America... it is quite delightful.

A Day in the Life of the Golden Gate Bridge-DVD

This is a pretty terrific little film, it is...
There are many things to like about this film and DVD. First, it's got some of the best photography of the Bridge I've seen. Second, there is the wonderful music the composers wove out of the "sampled" sounds of the Bridge itself, music that was played for the 50th anniversary celebration. The Day in the Life film is quite wonderful, showing the GGB as we who live in the Bay Area think of it -- an organic entity in and of itself, beyond time, use, and space. The DVD also contains a demonstration of the wonderful little app the Apple corps folk can pick up and play the sampled sounds for themselves. And of course the music the San Francisco Synthesizer Ensemble created from those sounds. More than this, the entire DVD is an exploration of the way an icon can become the inspiration for lovely work in different creative disciplines -- film, music, photography -- over a lifetime. Treat yourself.

Her Negotiation

Patricia Arquette is guest star this episode
This show often hires absolutely wonderful talent to guest star and this episode showcased this aspect by hiring Patricia Arquette. We open with her looking like a middle aged woman going to daily mass and she looks well into her forties. Shortly thereafter she transforms herself into a street prostitute and you would never know it is the same person. Her importance to the episode is that she is the person a killer on the rampage in the city keeps calling and trying to meet. SVU needs to keep on her night and day to find this killer. Arquette essentially blows every other actor off the screen with this role.

For those not familiar with Arquette, she was a leading film actress before turning to tv. She worked with most of the top directors and male stars. She branched off into tv as she aged. She starred in her own show MEDIUM for many seasons. She comes from a family of actors, including Roseanna Arquette and David Arquette.

A year or so ago this show hired...

Raul Esparza makes this season great.
Any of the 6 episodes Raul Esparza has been in this season so far are great. His expressions, props, costumes, as well as dialogue make you concentrate on him whenever he is on screen.

An intriguing, addicting, and timeless classic.
L&O SVU has been one of my favorites since 2005. I'd watch it every now and then on late-night TV, then was very excited to find it more recently on Amazon Prime with every episode at my disposal. The way the show is written keeps you interested for the full hour and unable to wait for the next episode. I have heard a lot of people talk about how the smart police work in L&O Criminal Intent is far superior to SVU. In my opinion, the chance of dealing with a live victim, and watching them and their families deal with the crisis forms the perfect B plot while watching a team of smart, quick, and on occasion funny detectives solve the case. Also comparing to the original Law and Order and Criminal Intent, you get to see events take a turn away from the conventional "someone in New York City is a murderer and we'll comb the city until we find him/her" style. Most of the time, the murderer in these shows has some kind of notorious reason behind it. In SVU, the culprits sometimes believe...

Goodnight, Gracie

One of the best shows ever
We love watching this as a family - even though there are definitely some "inappropriate" spots, it's hilarious and the characters really do love each other, so it's not meanspirited.

Season 4 grows on you!
The writers of this show set the standard for half hour comedies. This ensemble of actors compliment each other so well, each episode leaves you wanting more. The difficulty with Family centered sitcoms is that the "kids" grow up. The multiple layers of ages in the young actor roles will provide many seasons of staying power - much like the Cosby Show has done. Regardless of the week's story line, the three family dynamic continues to broaden and become richer. Ouststanding cast, crew, writing and production.

The show got it's swing back here
The last season of MF was okay, but in Season 4 episodes like The Butler's Escape, Arrested, and The Future Dunphys show how the show has taken to laughing at itself. This season worked well.

This is a pretty good documentary about Gary Ridgeway. It shows how inept the police were, yet again, in overlooking suspects. They should have caught this guy LONG before they actually did.

Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time and keep your eye on the sparrow
This documentary was dead balls on, it started with Robert when he was a little rascal and followed him all the way up to the alleged murder. Anyone in their right mind, would smell the foul play wreaking from this crime scene. How anyone could get found innocent of murder is beyond me under those circumstances but there is no DNA and if the glove don't fit you must acquit OPPS that was a wrong murder case. Bonnie was a low down gold digging slut there's no doubt about that but did she deserve to die I don't think so anyway you cut it this is one of the best mug shot episodes there is. Great interviews from those who were with him his last days. I would recommend for any true Hendrix fan. Watch this!!

THe presentation had some good interviews- yet theres so much more than what was presented around Jimi's death
Tony Brown's book - The Final Days of Jimi Hendrix gives a much more complete, hour by hour account of Jimi's final days and hours of his life. the Book is basically the Last 3 weeks of Jimi's Life acount, Very detailed and thee most comprehensive analog of Jimi's finally days..... Jimi had been dead for hours waaayyy before the ambulance arrived, though the ambulance staff did all they could ,Jimi, sadly, had been long gone hours before they arrive. IN the 42 years of being into Jimi Hendrix and His Music,in MY view
something much more sinister was afoot at the time of Jimi's demise. Surprisingly youtube has some very enlightening presentations on the subject,as well. Mugshots not bad but not the best in light if such.

VERY INFORMATIVE!!!

I've loved Jimi & his music since I first heard it at age 11 back in 1968. I even had a custom built truck named Jimi because Jimi jammed.

What took me by surprise in this document is that Eric Clapton was with Jimi just before he died just as he was with Stevie Ray Vaughan, my two favorite guitar players ever.

The Gene Autry Show - The Final Season

Gene And Pat Return In Color For An Exceptional Final Season In 1955.
At the end of season one of The Gene Autry Show, in 1951, episodes 25 and 26 were filmed and broadcast in color over CBS using their short lived color system. In season five, the show reverts back to color after seasons 2-4 which were in black and white. Though two of Gene's movies in the late 1940's had been filmed using an inferior film process called Cinecolor, all color shows from seasons 1 and 5 of the television series look very good. Gene now runs a ranch for boys; the stories are still terrific, with superb characters and plenty of action for children of every age.

Last Season
This completes my The Gene Autry Show collection. It is in color! He was one of my heroes as I was growing up. Maybe that is why my generation had a better understanding of good and bad. If you enjoy The Gene Autry Show this final season is a must for your collection.

The Gene Autry Show The Final Season
Another of the Autry produced shows with top quality values and great for the whole family. Again lots of action and not to much viloence. Abonus for us fans was the use of color in the final season letting us see the color of his costumes and great back ground scenery.

Public Enemy [Blu-ray]

"Modern Screen Acting Begins Here."
What a terrific film THIS is!

William Wellman's "Public Enemy" is a tour-de-force performance by James Cagney, wrapped within some elegant direction and supported by a simple but effective screenplay.

First, Mr. Cagney is clearly lightyears ahead of everyone else on the screen in terms of acting style, technique and ability. The quote I use in the title of my review comes from Mr. Scorsese, who screened this film prior to beginning "The Aviator" for several members of the cast and crew. One young actor noted that it appeared that modern screen acting began with Cagney's performance, and that actor could not have been more correct. It's almost obvious in retrospect.

Second, Wellman's direction I didn't notice at first, until viewing the documentary after the film. Then I realized how artful and creative it was, especially considering it was made in 1931. His in-frame composition is eye-catching. The manner in which he consistently shows the most violent...

I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles
THE PUBLIC ENEMY was James Cagney's first starring vehicle. Not only was it the first movie to push a grapefruit in Mae Clarke's startled kisser, it was the movie that propelled Cagney to stardom. It's a gangster film that tells the story of the meteoric rise and early fall of young street punk Tom Powers.
THE PUBLIC ENEMY opens with a quasi-documentary montage of shots of Chicago circa 1909, taking the viewer from the els to the stockyards to the opening sequence of the movie proper - a Salvation Army band marching in front of a saloon, a brewery, past the movie's two heroes as young boys - young boys sneaking a drink from the pail of beer they're bringing to someone, somewhere.
Director William Wellman built this one, and built it good. Interesting camera placement and movement and some very well edited scenes - the heisting of the fur warehouse scene is a case in point, one of a number of scenes that averts its eyes when the bullets splat flesh and, somehow, makes...

James Cagney at his ultimate
James Cagney reached the pinnacle of acting success in this 1931 pre-Code gangster thriller.

As Tom Powers, Cagney comes off as pugnacious, cocky, sexy and must be billed as one of the most misogynistic characters ever. (I'm female, and I still find his squashing of the grapefruit in Mae Clarke's surprised maw a riot.) With a certain comedic flair, as a bad guy who thinks he is good, Cagney is endearing as one one of the first and best of Hollywood's bad boys.

Reviewers, however, focus too much on what is now classically referred to as "the grapefruit episode." Instead, "Public Enemy" has to be watched for what I call "The Death of Putty Nose" episode where Tom murders Putty, a bad guy who had done him wrong. Putty begs for reprieve, then tries to endear Tom to him by serenading him at the piano with a song from Tom's childhood. Putty Nose nervously looks back at Cagney standing behind him, who smiles beatifically upon him in response. When...

One Kine Day [HD]

Not Such A Fine Day
I bought this DVD as I am leaving Hawaii after 21 years and I want to have a small collection of films made in or about Hawaii. This movie has only one speed. Slow. I can't believe I watched the whole thing. I kept waiting, hoping something would happen next, or at all to justify my time. It certainly does portray a segment of the youth society/culture that exists here and there is value in that, but I doubt many other people outside of the islands would care or relate. This movie gave me a good dose of anxiety. I could not believe just how gullible and downright stupid some of these kids are and how disconnected from them their parents are. I was just waiting for someone to wake up and pay attention. But I guess that's the whole purpose of the film. There really isn't much hope for a future for the youth over here. Having had raised my son here I can see that is an accurate portrayal. Watching this film was like peeking through the windows into our neighbor's homes and lives. Not...

Yossi

Ten Years Later: This Israeli Film Explores The Road Chosen And The Life Not Lived
What a difference ten years can make! Director Eytan Fox and star Ohad Knoller return to catch up with the titular character Yossi from their powerfully understated 2002 film "Yossi and Jagger." Simply and appropriately titled "Yossi," this sequel-of-sorts is really an entirely different beast. The original film was not just a love story, but a look into the workings and relationships within a small Israeli army outpost. It had an almost documentary feel, a voyeuristic fly-on-the-wall vibe in which you learned about camp life by catching brief exchanges and small moments between all of the characters. In that way, it had a daring simplicity in style (and was not, perhaps, the movie that some people might have wanted). I, personally, think these choices made the film a great and challenging experience. The Yossi and Jagger pairing was woven into a much larger tapestry. So when the movie turned its focus on their fate, it was all the more real and devastating. "Yossi," set...

Ten years of silent private grieving
For all of those who saw and were deeply touched by the 2002 Eytan Fox film, YOSSI & JAGGER, this sequel simply titled YOSSI will resurface all manner of fine memories of the original. Not only is this a fine follow-up film, a glance back at a gay love affair the took place in the Israeli Army that ended in the death of one of the lovers, it offers a story of the healing of grieving as well as the dramatic changes that have taken place in Israel concerning the current acceptance of gay men serving opening in the military. Times are changing, at last.

In the ten years since Dr. Yossi Guttman (the sensitive actor Ohad Knoller recreating his original role) lost his lover in the war while fighting he has become an honored but overworked cardiologist, living alone, having gained weight, and his only social life is connecting with same sex dates on the Internet. One of his dates (who responded to an earlier photo of Yossi) is Yariv (Gil Desiano), a young hunk who when Yossi comes...

A film of great loss and the renewal of spirit
Anyone who has suffered the sort of loss that Yossi has will "get" this movie. Yossi's day-to-day grind with nothing to look forward to, his allowing himself to go to seed, his belief that no one could love him again, his fear that if he comes out of his shell or comes out of the closet, he will be scorned by his friends and co-workers -- all these suggest that he's defeated from the start. But he's not. There's a small flame burning, and this movie follows his painful progression. Yossi reaches an important milestone when he makes contact with Jagger's parents and confesses to them his love for Jagger and the truth of their relationship, something Jagger himself would have done had he lived. This marks the moment of Yossi's actual coming out with mixed results -- Jagger's mother rejects, Jagger's father innately understands. From then on, the changes occurring inside Yossi speed up until he's able to respond to a younger "out" soldier who sees in him the value he is unable to see in...

10 lesser-known but excellent Film Noirs make it to DVD
This collection is the DVD debut for all ten of these films, and I don't even know if any of them are available on VHS. I've only seen them thanks to Turner Classic Movies playing them at odd hours, along with other cable channels presenting them over the years. They are excellent but not well remembered film noirs. I would rate them all between 4 and 5 stars. I thought I would list their descriptions, stars, and special features below, not in any particular order:

Crime Wave: (1954) Starring Sterling Hayden and Gene Nelson. An ex-con is trying to go straight, but circumstances force him into crime one more time. Gene Nelson plays a hard-nosed cop. Note a young Charles Bronson playing a minor role.

Commentary by James Ellroy and Eddie Muller

Crime Wave: The City is Dark

Theatrical trailer

Decoy: (1946) Starring Gene Gillie and Edward Norris. Sci-Fi meets Film Noir in this story of a woman who will stop at nothing to retrieve 400K...

fun collection...excellent transfers GREAT extras!!
Okay...I'll let others go into the actual films..
I enjoy them all for different reasons but am a noir fan and a big fan of Mitchum and Sterling Hayden who appear here so I didn't need convincing to purchase. Lets not forget these are directed by Andre De Toth, Nicholas Ray,Don Siegel, Anthony Mann,John Sturges and Fred Zinnemann...legends all. Its also fun to see Charles Bronson as a bit player in "Crime Wave" along with Gene Nelson (not singing or dancing in this one) as well as a young Janet Leigh in "Act OF Violence".

I'd like to review the DVDs themselves...(having just made my way through much of this).
first ...the transfers are excellent (typical for WB's older titles)
The extras...commentaries are by legit experts who know the films and add real value. The commentary by James Ellroy on Crime WAve is the most unbelievably NONPC and hysterically funny/interseting one I've ever heard PERIOD. The short featurettes are also enlightening and give extra...

Bravo! Bravo!
Whoever put this collection together should get a promotion, a raise, and a personal letter of thanks from every serious noir fan. This is an absolutely wonderful assortment of moody, gritty noirs that deserve to be better known. Of the ten (yes, TEN!) movies in this collection, none except "The Big Steal" has ever been on commercial VHS, much less DVD. "Decoy" is so scarce that the only version generally circulating before now was taken from a European TV broadcast, complete with Croatian subtitles.

Before anyone gets the wrong idea: these are not masterpieces. They are, however, very good movies and quintessential noir. The selection has been made with care and affection. This set is ideal for newcomers to noir who have seen a number of the genre cornerstones and want to further steep themselves in the essential style without the glitter of A-list productions. Dedicated noirphiles, of course, have been awaiting official high-quality transfers of these films for...

Love Sick Love

I LOVE YOU NORMAN
The film opens with first person narration from Dori (Katia Winter) who talks about love. She has apparently met Mr. Right in Norman (Matthew Settle). They have an intimate relationship she reads too much into. Norman agrees to a long weekend getaway to a secluded home up north. Here Norman is surprised by Dori's two children and grandparents. Things turn sour after Dori says the dreaded "L" word and we soon see Norman in the tied up condition depicted on the cover.

Dori abides by a relationship book that claims you have to experience all the holidays with each other, which she quickly does in June, with her family considering the odd behavior normal.

This is indeed a quirky film, one for women who have grown tired of bad relationships. It is an impressive indie which oozed with dark comedy and ironic statements. Great date night film.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, brief nudity (Katia Winter)

Grrrrrrrreat
I saw this film at the St. Louis Film Festival and totally enjoyed it from begininng to end. Beautiful young mom finds handsome young partner thought it was going to be a love story, turns out to have it all, love, horror, suspense and comedic chaos. Definitely worth seeing. One of my favorite scenes was when Albert recounts and reminds Norman about the specific profanities he used and how many times he used them.

And as you can see from the varying reviews, the controversy rages on. Which just proves how alive and well and timely a film Catch-22 truly is.

Mike Nichols captures the essence of Joseph Heller's defining anti-war classic quite admirably, with a faithful adaptation by Buck Henry (who can be seen along with a veritable Who's Who period ensemble cast), with an eye as removed and objective as Kubrick, yet at times very visually subjective ..... an approach used to great advantage in his previous hit film The Graduate. All the verbal and ethical contradictions of the book bring its dark humor to demented life, through a kaleidoscopic cavalcade of archtypical characters who make up the living...

I love this movie!
Catch-22 is probably my all-time favorite novel and favorite movie. I constantly read reviews of the film version claiming that it doesn't quite reach the level of insanity the novel elevates to and that it is clouded and too literal. I know, there are a lot of things that one just cannot believe are not in the movie, like General Peckem or ex-P.F.C. Wintergreen or Hungry Joe screaming in his sleep whenever he is off combat duty again or Chief White Halfoat waiting to die of pnuemonia and threatening to slit Flume's throat ear ot ear or the chaplain's morbid, introverted struggles or Yossarian censoring letters as Washington Irving. But you can't put EVERYTHING in a movie. I love this movie a lot. I think it sort of becomes its own thing, apart from the novel. Plus, it does bring across the main points and feelings of the novel. In fact, I'm surprised how understandingly Mike Nichols directs and the actors act and the dialogue is executed. Just watch the scene near the...

Good when taken by itself...
If you start comparing this film to the book (which obviously you must do to an extent) you will find so many things wrong with it you will never stop. A good comparison would be Stanley Kubrick's version of "The Shining," which also is very good when taken separate from the book while the book is far superior. Catch-22, the novel, is a brilliant piece of writing that could never be captured on screen, but I think Nichols makes a vallant effort of it. One complaint is the character of Milo is blown out of all proportion, becoming in the film a meglomanical dictator rather than a flagrant opportunist who exploits the men for his "Syndicate." Jon Voight, it must be said, does a good job in this interpretation of Milo.

Parts of the book are notably absent; Orr is barely mentioned until the end, the Glorious Loyalty Oath Crusade, one of my favorite parts, is gone completely and the brutal satire surrounding the Chaplain's life on the base and the doctor...

Hardball

Charming Keanu
In general I find Keanu Reeves to be stiff, wooden and lacking in acting skills. This is one of only 4 movies I really liked and appreciated him in. (Speed, The Watcher and The Gift are the others). In Hardball which is based on a true story Reeves plays a ne-er do well gambler with a big debt to pay off and ends up coaching an inner city little league team. The kids on the team are coping with all of the ills of project living you can imagine - random shootings, death, drugs, gangs, intimidation. Baseball offers them some respite from their reality. One of the sweetest scenes of this movie is when Reeves takes the kids to see their first major league baseball game and they yell to Sammy Sosa who acknowledges them...sweet, sweet, sweet. Watching the kids and spectators start singing Big Poppa by Biggie Smalls during a game is a hoot and a half. The ending is such a tear jerker that it is almost embarrassing to feel so moved by such a small story. And realize that it's a true...

Hardball
The movie proved that Keanu Reeves is very capable of expressing emotions on screen, contrary to his harshest critics. He was able to convey his initial attitude change from someone who was only coaching a kid's baseball team for money he desparately needed, to someone who genuinely cared with subtle finesse. It wasn't a cartoon character performance. The child actors also performed at a professional level not expected from their age group.

Enragingly Honest - Encouragingly Hopeful.
A film, not unlike poetry projects different messages to different people.
This story begins where Conor, a hardened gambler finds himself on his knees in a sanctuary. The priest asks him if he's looking for faith or forgiveness. "I'm looking for the balls to cover the spread." He replies with submissive desperation. He returns to a bar where he loses himself in the purposeless world of gambling, finds himself in the desperate situation of not having enough money to cover his gambling debt, and winds up being beaten up by a loan shark. His desperation leads him to accept a job coaching a baseball team that consists of underprivileged kids from the crime infested projects for $500.00 a week. The team is short two players. Their school teacher, Sister Wilkes, played by Diane Lane, won't allow the two members who complete the team to play until they have read their book reports. Conor takes it upon himself to negotiate with her, and ends up agreeing to tutor the boys. Initially the...

Half a Sixpence

A constant joy
I resent the Amazon reviewer's caustic remarks about the movie, Richard and Steele. This movie was a true delight from beginning to end. The dancing was glorious and lots of it. The songs by this time were old friends. Incidentally, I've heard the cast recordings of the London, Bway and movie versions. A few songs were the same in all 3, others came and went, which I thought was odd. Tommy Steele (35 years ago, can you believe it!) was wonderful as was everyone, it was a little long (2 hours and 25 minutes), but it was always fun and exciting. I loved it. Incidentally, the villains were just nasty enough to get their point across, nothing to enrage you, and their comeuppance was also just right, not some scathing triumph. I found the whole thing a pleasure, just as I did 35 years ago.

Half a Sixpence on DVD--Better Than None
Contrary to what another reviewer has said, Half a Sixpence was a throughly delightful show on stage, at least on Broadway, thanks to a great performance by Tommy Steele, a charming cast, and wonderful choreography by Onna White who went on to do the choreography for the film version of Oliver! The movie version of Sixpence didn't quite have all the charm of the show, but it does have Steele, who gives his all, a touching performance by Julia Foster as Anne, and Grover Dale from the Broadway cast (who would also appear in the Demy film musical The Young Girls of Rochefort. The production values are pleasing to the eye. I'd say one of the flaws of the movie is the unimaginative choroeography by Gillian Lynne (who eventually worked on Cats)--I'm not sure why White wasn't available. The movie includes most of the score of the show, but it cuts one of the show's best songs, Long Ago--it's sung briefly by a chorus at the beginning and is also used as background music but it was an...

Widescreen and Stereo at last!
British entertainer Tommy Steele appeared in three big-budget, reserved seat musicals within a year's time - 1967-1968, and then never made another musical film again. While Steele is one of the only assets in Disney's interminable "The Happiest Millionaire", he was much more well utilized in "Finian's Rainbow" as Og the Leprechaun. But his biggest starring role was in the film that came between those two - the gigantic film version of the stage musical "Half a Sixpence". Directed by George Sidney, the film massively realizes what had been a fairly middle-weight, mediocre stage show. Until this DVD release, the film has never been available on home video in its original Panavision aspect ration, with four track stereo surround. And what a difference this transfer makes from the cropped, grainy VHS tape of the film! Splendidly designed, beautifully shot, elegantly scored, and using both studio sets and sweeping location footage, the film is at least...

K-On! The Movie [Blu-ray] (2011)

For fans of the series, a dream come true.
Alright, those of you looking for a self-contained anime film will be disappointed this was a project that was obviously made for fans of the series. It's pretty much an episode of the series expanded to an hour and forty-five mins. It contains in-jokes from the series and while there is a plot there's no major conflict. In fact, the opening few minutes makes a joke about the lack of real conflict in the film.

Now, if you are a fan of the series, this is a dream come true. The characters are all there, most side characters get enough screen time that you get to revisit just about everyone. The plot is partially about the London trip which was discussed in the season 2 OVA, but it's also about writing the song that they will sing to their underclassman as they graduate. It's sentimental, sweet and everything you've come to expect from the series. As a bonus, just about every song in the series is in it at some point.

The animation is beautiful, and expands upon...

Great movie and nice special features!
[*First off, my apologies for the novel I seem to have written. I tried to strike a balance between short and informative. Anyhoo...*]

The overview below is based off the 2-disc DVD edition (so the content would be the same as the blu-ray but you'll have access to it all on a single disc). I outlined a summary but if you want a super short summary, it's basically: getting this movie gives you almost 2 hours of film and 2 and a half hours of special features.

The movie continues where the end of season 2 was leading into: the 5 members of the Light Music Club are going to London for their graduation trip and Yui, Mio, Ritsu, and Tsumugi plan what to get Azusa before they graduate. If you've watched the series then watch the movie; if you haven't [see my note at the bottom], start here (K-ON!, Vol. 1) or here (K-ON! DVD [Anime...

A great buy for any K-ON! fan ^_^
One of my favorite movies based off an anime, You can tell the animators took their time on it. It is cute and the music is great. If you are a hardcore K-ON you'll love this movie ^_^

The new "slackers"
If you enjoy Clerks and Slackers and those types of slow dramas about underachievers who are bitter and mean then turn out to have a heart in the end you will love this movie! Personally, I don't.

Watched this cause of Jesse Eisenberg
I had this movie in the watchlist since May 2013 when it came to Amazon(watch while in theaters). I can see why this movie never got a wide release.
I don't see this movie making it in the theaters.
this movie seems like a movie that would be enjoyed by the select few who actually like these type of movies.
The movie was good.
I liked the supporting characters/actors.
The main character was getting on my nerves, after a minute of listening to her talk, I had to tone her out and focus on only the other character she was talking to her.
Just one question though; Who's Mike? (name on the truck)

If I could give it a zero I would
Worse movie...plot was awful, actors were terrible and I want the time I spent watching it back. Thought it would be a humorist story, but def wrong. I shut it off before it even finished...it was awful!

Once Upon A Time In Brooklyn [HD]

Must See - Pick this one up
Action, drama - cars, girls and guns - it's all here. Once Upon a Time in Brooklyn knows what you want in a movie of this genre and definitely delivers. The cast is strong and the writing is sharp. This movie holds no punches, literally, and hits you with a couple of laughs from some clever screenwriters. Bobby's character played by William DeMeo is a tough guy right out of prison struggling with making the choice to go back to the life he knows or make his family proud. High adrenaline from the opening credits to an unexpected twist of an ending this is a movie you don't want to miss and without a doubt one to add to the collection!

I HATE RATS.
Bobby (William DeMeo) gets out of prison after five years for armed robbery. He opts to go after the rats that put him in there. He works for a crime family. He is the son of a well off somewhat honest construction company owner who does not like the mob, but must deal with them. The story is told with flashbacks and flashbacks during flashbacks. It has some first person narration by Bobby, but changes up at will to have some policeman narration.

The film is a gritty look at the crime world filled with connections and favors. Bobby loathes the flamboyant lifestyle of those criminals who flaunt their wealth, but is forced to work with them. Bobby is by no means an honorable person himself, screwing up relationships, sometimes being his worse enemy.

The acting was wonderful, but the plot wasn't solid as if the editor had hiccups. Worth a rental for those for enjoy mafia style crime movies.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, sex, stripper nudity.

Great Movie!!!
I am a fan of Mob Movies and this one directed by Paul Borghese is right on the money!!!! Bought it, loved it, will watch it again

Side Effects (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet)

A killer thriller that weaves one twisted web
Side Effects is a film you can't really describe without giving anything away. Avoid the trailers if possible, make it through the slow build up and you will get quite a few surprises in the second half. Easily one of the best thrillers I have seen in a long time. Jude Law in his best performance in years as a psychiatrist and Rooney Mara, fresh off of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, knocks it out of the park again as his depressed patient. She has become one of my favorite actresses. Catherine Zeta-Jones is effective and Channing Tatum has little to do, but is adequate enough. Never boring and often surprising, if this is Steven Soderbergh's last movie, he went out at the top of his game.

Over the top, but Hitchcockian twists!
***No spoilers follow***
Sure there are a few things that don't quite follow, but if you are a fan of the old Hitchcock and Twilight Zone episodes, you will appreciate this suspenseful puzzler of a movie. Centered around a psychiatrist, his depressed patient, and a fictional medication, things devolve into a murder which we witness. From there, we are never quite sure what is true and what is not. Entertaining, suspenseful, and sure, a few loose ends but who's counting? A fun way to spend an evening, and after the show, you can explain the twists to our companion!

Kept us guessing but dissapointing
The major negative was how it ends. It simply wasn't believable.. we really enjoyed it right up until we figured out what was going on.. we made a joke earlier in the movie and it turned out to be the truth. Oh well.

The Far Horizons

Colourful Historical Adventure
Released theatrically in 1954, "The Far Horizons" is an entertaining film about the Lewis and Clark expedition at the turn of the ninteenth century, a pivotal event in the history of the United States. I suspect that historians will roll their eyes at the "Hollywood" version of this famously long, arduous but important expedition that ultimately ensured that America would reach from "sea to sea". Personally I have no problem with actual events being "enhanced" for the entertainment, as well as the enlightenment, of an audience.

President Thomas Jefferson (avuncular Herbert Heyes) has just completed the massive Louisiana Purchase deal with Napoleon, greatly expanding the territory of the United States. However, this vast area now needs to be explored and mapped. The President decides that his loyal secretary, Meriwether Lewis (steadfast Fred MacMurray), is the man for the job, along with a soldier experienced in fighting Indians, William Clark (a driven, intense Charlton...

Good Movie!
I realize that this movie is not completely accurate and that a Native American did not play the part of Sacajawea, but I thought it played out well because it gave us a clear idea of some of the circumstances that led up to and possibly happened during this arduous journey west. The scenery was beautiful. My daughter is reading a book about Sacajawea and it opened her eyes to many interesting events in history. One of them being how the Indians lived and their devotion to the land was very apparent. I am very happy to have purchased this movie and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand this part of history better. You may want to read about this part of history first, like we did, so that you can separate fact from fiction.

Memories
Enjoyed seeing the movie "Far Horizons" again. Watched part of it filming in Jackson Hole country back in 1954. Nice to have it on DVD.

Dearly Departed

Fantastic Movie, Way To Go Daryl Anka
As much as I have watched and learned from you over the years, this movie ranks at the top. The acting is spot on, the visuals were fantastic, and the overall flow of it was perfect. Having experienced all of this for the past decade myself, all I can say is that for me, this is reality. All the best to you, Mr. Anka, and see you in my dreams.

Will open your eyes!
Dearly Departed was one of the most touching, heart warming, paradigm shifting films I've seen. The truth of the characters and their perspectives is something we can all relate to as much as the circumstances surrounding them. And the seeds of spiritual truth seamlessly woven into the story helps us to remember THE truth and what really matters. I loved this movie and getting to experience it shortly after my father's passing was a blessing I can't express enough thanks for.

Great tool to the after Side!!
This video explains step by steps how some people experience the crossing to the after live explaining how people cross with there beliefs and takes time to adjust to the higher mind, Love it!!!!

John Portman: A Life of Building [HD]

Great Documentary on the Life of This Architect
I am not an Architect by trade, but I have a great love of architecture as an art form. I never knew of John Portman before seeing this and I now have insight to the great contributions this man have made to US commercial architecture and even to global commercial building design. I really loved the way the producers included the family life of Mr. Portman and how he was as a father to his children even with the busy life that he had as both an architect and building commercial real estate developer.

Assassin

Good movie, but no subtitles
The movie was good even though I don't speak the language they're speaking (I'm assuming it's Korean). Like any action movie, you don't need to understand it to understand the basic premise, though subtitles would have been nice.

Huh??
It appears it may be a good movie, however I wouldn't know because there are no subtitles, THAT SUCKS !!

AMAZON FAIL
Unwatchable.

If you don't speak an Asian language then don't attempt to watch this film (if I knew which one I'd tell you.).

Amazon needs to 1) inform customers of the film's spoken language and 2) offer English subtitles to its English-speaking customers (as any theater in the U.S. would).

So far watching foreign films on Amazon is a hit and miss affair. First one had subtitles this one doesn't. My rating of this movie is directed purely at the Amazon experience.

Kandi and her team are pretty amazing. However, contestants don't always make you want to love them. Kandi/producers, please try to find some attractive people that aren't so awkward next season....well, at least the attractive part! Remember the original formula - Kim Z? She had no real singing talent, but her aesthetic and personality were marketable....I am all for the diamond in the rough, but they can't still look like a lump of coal once you shine them up;)

Tarot art at its best
This film can transform your way of looking at the Tarot.

in my opinion, anyone seriously interested in reading the Tarot cards should see it - preferably more than once. Enrique's performance makes the Tarot come alive with his unique creative approach, inspiring you to do the same. his favorite is the classical Tarot de Marseille, but a similar approach can work with any Tarot deck.

A Tarot must
I highly recommend Enrique Enriquez's Enrique Enriquez-Tarology (film) movie to all lovers of the Marseille Tarot in particular and of poetry in general!

The Source Family

Amazing documentary about an extraordinary man
I'd never heard of The Source Family until about a year ago when I saw Djin Aquarian play at a show in LA. After the show, a friend of mine filled me in on The Source Family and Father Yod. I didn't know too much more until I watched this documentary today. It's an incredible snapshot in time (1970s Los Angeles) and an extraordinary look into the history of Father Yod and the Source Family. An extremely well composed documentary explaining the evolution of this family using original archival footage, interspersed with interviews of the original members commenting on their time with the family. You're taken on an amazing journey, from the well-meaning spiritual beginnings of Father Yod and the Source Family, to the overblown ego-driven antics of it's leader. It's amazing to hear the stories of the followers of Father Yod and the impact, both constructive and destructive, he had on these people's lives. Ironically, there are many parallels between Father Yod and Jim Jones. It's a...

An Excellent Overview of the 1960's -- 1970's Search for Something Greater
Jim Baker had a big personality and this movie does it justice. The interviews of former Source Family members are priceless. They provide an inside view of what it was like to grow up and live in a cult. I highly recommend this documentary to anyone with interest in communal living experiments and / or the study of alternative religions.

You are your own GURU!
Perfect illustration of why it is dangerous to allow anyone to lead you by your spirituality! Movie is powerful and AWESOME!

The Bake Street Hauntings

Slightly above average indie horror
I felt I had to rent this and write a review, considering that at least one of the reviews already on here was written by a cast member. I have seen just about every haunted house and found footage film available, and most of them are complete crap. I'm happy to say that this one bucks the trend and is actually not horrible. Still, I wouldn't say that it's good, but it seems to be an achievement to make an indie horror flick that's simply tolerable.

The movie is very short - just 70 minutes - which makes it great as a short diversion. However, it also leaves little room to develop characters or a plot. As a result, both end up being wafer thin and easily forgettable. Even the house, which used to be the main character in any haunted house story, as well as the ghosts themselves, have taken supporting roles in a movie that really stars a few good haunt scenes. Thankfully, these scenes are the movie's real strong points, and I dare say that some of them were creepy. I...

Better than expected!
I am a fairly critical reviewer of horror, primarily because today it is so inexpensive (both in time and money) for most anyone to create a movie and upload it to Amazon and elsewhere, that there is a glut of absolutely terrible "films" on the market today (and I think that now that genie is out of the bottle, so this is the new reality of the horror movie genre). Anyway, suffice to say that I have spent a lot of my meager disposable income on streaming movies here on Amazon and on Netflix, with very few real creepy and spooky moments to show for it - especially with regard to "lost footage" films which are the most conducive to those no/low budget movies I mentioned. So it was with no small amount of surprise when I found myself genuinely creeped out by The Bake Street Hauntings. I won't give any spoilers here, and while this movie is not perfect, it makes up for its shortcomings (one big one being wayyy too many F-bombs - OH and the chemistry between the "husband" and "wife" is...

Don't waste your time
I was hoping for the best, but this movie disappointed so badly that I made a point of going online to review it--something I've never been motivated to do before, but I'd hate for someone else to waste their time like we did. You don't need a big budget to make a scary movie, but you do need a story. This had nothing but a bare bones idea that they never did a thing to develop. The scares were few and far between and lame as hell. It was one of those movies where you're constantly going, "No one would do that" or "Why don't they just turn on the lights?" So flipping stupid.

The Eyes of Thailand

Brilliant Film
This amazing true story follows a group of dedicated people saving the lives of elephants. They create prostheses for elephants who are injured from land mines. Imagine building a new leg or foot to support an elephant. It is amazing to watch. Soraida's dedication and love for these injured elephants moved my heart and soul. Thank you for the hopeful movie.

A MUST See!
I know Soraida and the work she does at the "FAE" in Thailand. She is a true hero and I do not say that lightly..or often.
There are soooo many out there "claiming" to help elephants but do more harm than good.
So many people have no idea what is going on with the plight of the Asian elephants.
As a former performer with Ringling Brothers Circus (of horrors) I can tell you that the elephants live's here in this Country as well as in their homelands is an ugly and heartbreaking situation.
i have devoted my life to helping them...33 years as of Jan. 2014 to be exact.
Zoos, circuses, the argraian crisis taking place in their homelands, war, illegal logging camps, tourism, Temples...endless list of atrocities that continue to make life HELL for these amazing souls.
Please consider getting involved with helping these gentle giants.
If not..at least do no more harm.
Thank you.

The Eyes of Thailand
"The Eyes of Thailand" is a short documentary film that is really more intended as an intentionally conspicuous film device to make aware the plight of war and its horrible, devastating aftermath on elephants in Thailand. It focuses mainly on poor elephants mutilated by landmines, but it also includes human victims of war.

Elephants are the symbols of Asia, and yet the people there use them as draft animals, slaves, and beasts of burden. They routinely beat them, take away their offspring, and subject them to harsh conditions on logging farms or sell them off to circuses.

Anyone watching this documentary film who does not cry for at least one year, is well, inhumane. If you are prone to suffering, it will be extremely difficult to watch the elephant's leg damage due to landmine explosions.

It also details Soraida Salwala, who founded the first elephant hospital, "Friends of Asian Elephants Hospital" in Lampang, Thailand, who I regard as a saint to...
